Layers.
I was going to post a song from The Rocket Summer's new album that I really like, but I couldn't even find it on youtube yet.
In art class, we're starting what's called a self portrait still life, which is a painting of a collection of objects that describe you. My teacher was talking to us today about how we can figure out what describes us and who we are. Apparently we are all made up of three layers:
The innermost layer is our core, or the traits that will never change no matter what. These traits would still be a part of us no matter what culture we were raised in. It's impossible to actually know for sure what wouldn't change, but usually you have some idea.
The second layer is made up of things that have had some influence on us, such as our culture and upbringing, or experiences. This also makes up our personality traits, but these are the types of things that might change in ten years.
The outermost layer has the more "superficial" things that make up who we are. But not "superficial" as in bad, because superficial things can also be important. For example, your style might be on the outermost layer, but at the same time it's an expression of your core as well as other influences. These types of things are more likely to change in a week or so.
This post might have bored you, but I thought it was a rather interesting way to think about yourself if you're like me and are constantly trying to figure yourself out. This post kind of reminds me of Shrek when they say that ogres have layers :p. But seriously, it's something to think about.
And so this post isn't 100% text, I just wanted to share these amazing images that I saw on The Stylish Wanderer. The first one is ADAM and the second is Proenza Schouler. I love the belt over the chunky knits and the long sleeve tee with the dress. I'll have to try these two!
